November Numbness

This month, the month of the dead, the month of remembrance, the month of Death... this month, the grim reaper has hit home - again.

C.A.P. has died, in a fiery car accident.
Who is C.A.P. you ask?
C.A.P. is Carlos Alberto PIMÈNTEL - my first-degree cousin. He was quite exactly fifty years-old. I link here the Boston.com GUESTBOOK for his LEGACY as they put it... (Note that my entry has been pushed to page three now, but it can be read right here, rightow too:
My sympathy to Martina, Rita, tio Jose and tia Margarida. Sorrow is only normal now; but cry not and rejoice instead that he is in the Hands of God now. He may be asleep, awaiting The Day - he may be no longer there with you, physically - but he is on the Greater Side of Things. And Carlos will be seen again, by all those who held him dear. One day. On The Day. From one who is still in mourning too - mourning in Faith.
Luciano Pimentel (Laval, QC)

C.A.P. was a good man - that is the consensus.
He died heirless but many are mourning him now - on two continents too.
He has touched many lives, without siring one; perhaps because he didn't sire one.

Verily, how can one not feel NUMB at this point, when Death seems to be after everyone of their lineage lately...?
In a few short years, it has been an uncle, a lady cousin, my own saintly Dad and now C.A.P. here...
Before that, we had lost several precious members of the Clan - but over the course of 20 years or more.
This is too much in too short a timespan.
This means WAR!
As if this very blog wasn't me waging war upon the grim reaper already (methinks EVERYONE who's ever stopped by here has thoroughly grasped the significance of the URL that reads "deathtodeath" - hmm?) - I solemnly swear on this day to act as though DEATH HAS NO POWER OVER ME, from this day onward!
That's right; I shall be carefree, if not careless per say.
Not to advocate devil-may-care attitudes and total absence of caution in anyone's life, I will still detach myself from the constant material world's ULTIMATE LURE: to want to hold on to "precious life" here...
As with anything else down here (riches, fame, lustful desires, all seven deadly sins and the other category too...) one has only to see the EPHEMERAL nature of it all and ONE SHALL BE FREE.
Truly free, that is - free of any constraint.
Free as a "free spirit" should truly be: free to be PURE. Free to reach out for PURITY - and touch it, feel it and become one with It.

Perhaps that is what C.A.P. has finally done, now - his relatively short passage on this earth was riled with aspirations of various earthly merit; he tried to prove his dad wrong, he tried to please others, he tried to have fun... Countless others have done and do the exact same thing, every single day that goes by. C.A.P. as all the others who have passed on, crossed over to the other side, while caught in that cycle, now sees the true GOAL out there... And they all know that death is truly nothing to fear.

Hey - it's just a frail pack of bones veiled underneath some dark cloak; one punch and it will keel over and collapse!

No, death is nothing to fear - especially not when you are reaching out for the true goal - true Life. And true Life is not what we've known so far, down here...

November is, this year especially, doubling as a month of remembrance AND anniversaries - as the 18th marks the 30th anniversary of the tragic insanity that befell the eponymous "Jonestown" in 1978. Another aspect of REMEMBRANCE was underlined and bravely emphasized by the very Google staff, on their blog right here at Blogger. A remembrance day all their own for the transgendered, who have an increased risk (by an estimated 16 to 1 margin) of being MURDERED. The Google blog encouraged all to "take just a few moments to remember the trans siblings, parents, friends and lovers who lost their lives to gender-based intolerance and hatred" on November 20th, the chosen date for Transgender Remembrance Day. No one should have to suffer the loss of a loved one due to blind hatred - and none has the right to take another's life. Kudos to Google for reminding everyone of all this, with perhaps the least spoken of category of victims there could be out there... Remember also this: love the sinner, hate ONLY the sin.

Beyond all that remembrance, I shall suggest Remembrance that, verily, we should always have at heart: that of His Sacrifice for us all. And, fittingly, the day that I am blogging this, November 23rd, is indeed the day of CHRIST THE KING, on the Roman Catholic calendar; everybody's favorite calendar - right? Whether you believe in the power behind this sacrificial act or not, the fact remains that it is historical and that He Was Indeed Crucified, while Being indeed Innocent and Pure from any sin. He Did Die for someone else's sins, and it is but a simple leap of faith as of the imaginative mind to see it as a Redemptory Act for ALL SIN.

CHRIST, King of kings, died for us all.
Remember the greatest of all of those who have died - and the only One to have vanquished death and Risen Again (in a new glorified body - no longer mere flesh, let that be crystal clear to all) on this month of the dead; and thou shall not regret it.
Hey, thou may even be saved - if thou believeth!

Escapee convicted of killing judge in courtroom

Fri Nov 7, 4:35 PM

ATLANTA (Reuters) - A jury convicted a man on Friday of murdering a judge in a courtroom and killing three other people during his escape from custody in a spree that gained him instant notoriety, the court said.

Police and the FBI launched a huge manhunt for Brian Nichols in March 2005 after he committed a string of crimes while escaping from the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta, where he was being tried for rape.

Prosecutors want the death penalty for Nichols, 36, who was convicted of 54 counts including murder, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated assault and carjacking, a court official said.

He could be sentenced to execution by lethal injection or life in prison. Nichols pleaded not guilty on the basis of insanity.

While being prepared for a court hearing in 2005, Nichols overpowered a security guard, took her gun and entered the courtroom where he shot dead Judge Rowland Barnes and a court reporter in front of several witnesses.

During his escape, he killed a deputy sheriff outside the court. In the manhunt that followed, Nichols killed a federal agent, hijacked several cars and held a woman hostage in her home north of Atlanta before giving himself up.

PETIONVILLE, Haiti (AP) — A hillside school where roughly 500 students usually crowded into several floors collapsed during classes on Friday, killing at least 30 people and injuring many more. Rescuers used bare hands to pull bleeding students from the wreckage.

More children were believed buried in the rubble of the concrete building, and the death toll was likely to go higher, Yphosiane Vil, an civil protection official, told The Associated Press at the scene.

Neighbors suspected the building was poorly rebuilt after it partially collapsed eight years ago, said Jimmy Germain, a French teacher at the school. He said people who lived just downhill abandoned their land out of fear that the building would tumble onto them, and that the school's owner tried to buy up their vacated properties.

The concrete building's third story was still under construction, and Petionville Mayor Claire Lydie Parent told the AP she suspects a structural defect caused the collapse, not the recent rains.

Police commissioner Francene Moreau says the minister who runs the church-operated school could face criminal charges.

Parent said roughly 500 students from kindergarten through high school attend the school, College La Promesse, in the hills above Port-au-Prince. She did not know how many were inside when it collapsed late Friday morning.

The aid group Doctors Without Borders pulled out 85 people, half with life-threatening injuries, said Max Cosci, director of the group's Belgian contingent in Haiti.

Volunteers arrived with shovels and axes and said they would try to deliver water to others trapped inside.

A swelling crowd erupted with wails and prayers as the injured were carried away and emergency vehicles raced up a winding hill to the school.

"My child, my child!" one mother yelled.

"There are no words for this," the mayor said as the search for survivors intensified.

Haitian President Rene Preval visited the scene to offer his sympathy, and asked onlookers to come down from surrounding buildings that engineers feared might have been destablized by the collapse.

United Nations peacekeepers and Haitian police tried to clear a path for three battalions of military engineers from Brazil, Chile and Ecuador to assist in the rescue.

The Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, was sending two helicopters to help, Dominican health minister Bautista Rojas said. France's foreign minister Bernard Kouchner promised to send a rescue team as soon possible.

U.N. military commander Maj. Gen. Carlos Alberto Dos Santos Cruz had to walk uphill to get through the crowd.

"This is going to be an all-day affair," Red Cross official Matt Marek said.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, has been struggling to recover from widespread riots over rising food prices, a string of hurricanes and tropical storms that killed nearly 800 people.

The U.N. peacekeepers were sent to Haiti following the bloody ouster of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2004 and have improved security by fighting gangs and training local police.

Family outraged after Ont. girl buried without brain

Fri Nov 7, 1:22 AM

TORONTO (CBC) - The family of a young girl who died suddenly last month wants to know why coroners at a London, Ont., hospital removed her brain during the autopsy but didn't tell them until after the girl was buried.

Sanja Pandzic, 7, was killed by an unexpected heart problem, doctors told her family. The young girl died in hospital after losing consciousness at her family home in Woodstock, Ont., on Oct. 23.

"[They] said that it was a heart problem, so they're going to need to look into it more and see what's going on," Sanja's brother, Jasmin, told CBC's As It Happens Thursday.

"They wanted to check more deeper into it. They didn't say anything about the brain" following her death, he said.

Jasmin's mother, Dragica, said she gave the Woodstock hospital where Sanja died permission to send the body to University Hospital in London for an autopsy.

The girl's body was returned and buried less than a week later in a traditional Islamic ceremony, under the assumption that she was being interred with all of her organs.

Two days after the funeral, Dragica received the news that Sanja's brain had been kept at the London hospital for further testing.

The Woodstock doctor called the family at home and told them "the papers said about the autopsy that they still had the brain of my sister...at the University Hospital in the autopsy department," Jasmin said, speaking for his mother throughout the interview as she cried quietly.

"They didn't tell us anything before that."

When he spoke to the regional supervising coroner for West London, Dr. Rick Mann, Jasmin said the doctor told him "that to do more tests on the brain will save other kids lives."

Dragica, whose religious beliefs dictate that the bodies of the dead must be buried whole, said the news was shocking.

"I asked 'Who give you permission to touch her brain?'...and [Mann] told me, 'We need brain for find something,'" she said.

The doctor said "that he must keep that brain for more time. It's hard for me - I get one shock when my girl passed away, and other shock was when he told me a part of her body is still in hospital."

Mann told CBC on Thursday that the coroner's office is entitled to keep organs without family permission, and that the investigation into Sanja's death is ongoing.

He is scheduled to appear on As It Happens Friday evening to discuss the issue.

No papers were ever signed that would give doctors permission to keep Sanja's organs, Jasmin said. His family now wonders if there are other parts the girl might be missing.

"If they took the brain, how do we now not know they didn't keep the heart or a kidney or something?"

Lawyers have told the family they must gather paperwork to prove that the London hospital still has Sanja's brain in order to get it back.

Meanwhile, the funeral home that buried the little girl has offered to pick up her brain from the hospital and bury it a few feet above the casket so as not to disturb the grave.

"They [doctors] I think suggested to cremate it and my mom said no, because she didn't let her daughter's body, whole body, get cremated, so why should she let them cremate the brain," Jasmin said.

Russian navy: sub accident kills more than 20

By STEVE GUTTERMAN, Associated Press Writer Steve Gutterman, Associated Press Writer – 39 mins ago

AFP/File – The Russian nuclear sumbarine "Vepr" is pictured in 2004. More than 20 people were killed and … MOSCOW – An accident aboard a nuclear-powered Russian navy submarine doing a test run in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday killed more than 20 people, the navy said.

The nuclear reactor aboard the submarine was operating normally and radiation levels were normal, navy spokesman Capt. Igor Dygalo said on Sunday.

The accident occurred when a fire-extinguishing system went into operation in error aboard the submarine, Dygalo said. He said there were 208 people aboard, including 81 servicemen. The dead included sailors and shipbuilders.

The submarine was heading back to shore on its own power, and 21 people injured in the accident were evacuated to a ship that was escorting the sub.

Dygalo said the destroyer Admiral Tributs and a rescue vessel were accompanying the submarine.

The state-run RIA-Novosti news agency cited an unnamed official in Russia's Pacific Fleet as saying the accident occurred toward the bow of the submarine and that there was no threat to the nuclear reactor, closer to the center.

Dygalo would not name the submarine or say exactly where the accident took place.

RIA-Novosti cited an unnamed official at the Amur Shipbuilding Factory as saying the sub was built there, is called the Nerpa and was on a test run in the Sea of Japan when the accident occurred.

The official said the sub was heading for a base in the Primorye region, which includes the port city of Vladivostok.

It was unclear what activated the fire-extinguishing system or how the victims were killed. RIA-Novosti cited an unnamed shipbuilding expert as saying fire systems on Russia's nuclear-powered submarines usually use foam and chemicals.

According to RIA-Novosti, testing on the submarine began last month and it submerged for the first time last week.

First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Kolmakov and navy chief Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky were heading for Russia's Pacific Coast in the wake of the accident, Dygalo said.

The Kremlin said President Dmitry Medvedev had been informed about the accident immediately by his defense minister and was receiving frequent updates, Russian news agencies reported. Medvedev ordered a thorough investigation.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was criticized for his slow response to the Kursk disaster, which marred the first of his eight years as president.

Russia's navy has been plagued by deadly accidents, including the explosions that sank the nuclear-powered submarine Kursk in the Barents Sea in 2000, killing all 118 seamen aboard. A submarine that was being taken out of service sank in the Barents Sea in 2003, killing 11 people.

Saturday's accident came as the Kremlin seeks to restore Russia's naval reputation, part of a drive to show off the country's military clout amid strained ties with the West. A naval squadron is headed to Venezuela for joint exercises this month in a show of force near U.S. waters.

Why did Evanston woman, 90, live with dead siblings?

FROM SUN-TIMES NEWS GROUP WIRE REPORTS
The three siblings whose bodies were found in an Evanston home Friday died of natural causes, but when they died remains a mystery, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said Saturday.

The skeletal remains of Anita D. Bernstorff, born in 1910, Frank A. Bernstorff, born in 1920, and Elaine B. Bernstorff, born in 1916, were examined Saturday. A full autopsy could not be done because of the bodies' state of decomposition, said an official at the medical examiner's office who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A 90-year-old woman, the sister of the three dead, was living with the bodies for an undetermined length of time, possibly decades, in the family's home on the 1200 block of Judson Avenue, officials said. Police removed the elderly woman from the home Friday and placed her in a senior care facility.

Officials: Israeli mob boss killed in car bombing

– Mon Nov 17, 3:23 pm ET AP – Israeli police officer from the bomb unit inspects a car as a colleague examines the body of man, after …
Slideshow: Car bomb kills Israeli mob boss TEL AVIV, Israel – A bomb exploded in a car carrying one of Israel's top mafia kingpins on Monday, killing him and threatening to unleash an all-out war in Israel's increasingly violent underworld.

Israeli police officials identified the dead man as Yaakov Alperon — known informally as "Don Alperon" — the head of one of the country's most powerful crime families. The bloodied body was wearing the same polo shirt Alperon was seen sporting earlier in the day at a Tel Aviv courthouse.

Medics said three bystanders were also lightly wounded in the explosion, including a 13-year-old boy.

Israelis are accustomed to violence with their Palestinian neighbors but have traditionally felt relatively safe from violent crime. In recent years, however, mob wars also have plagued Israeli towns and cities.

Rival underworld gangs have waged bloody battles for control of gambling and protection rackets, including one involving bottle recycling.

They target each other with bullets, bombs and even anti-tank missiles in violence that has killed dozens of gangsters and at least eight bystanders in the last three years. Monday's noontime attack was by far the most high-profile to date.

The explosion came as Alperon returned from a courthouse where his son, Dror, was facing extortion charges.

The brazen, midday assassination quickly dominated the news, pushing Palestinian rocket attacks from Gaza and a summit between the Israeli and Palestinian leaders off the airwaves. TV stations broke into their scheduled programming.

Police officials identified the victim as Alperon, speaking on condition of anonymity because the identification had not been officially made public. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld would say only that he was a "well known" underworld figure.

Alperon, Israel's most famous criminal, had also become something of a cultural icon. He and his brothers have given frequent TV interviews and were parodied on comedy shows. His immediate family even took part in a reality TV show.

Alperon had many enemies, including convicted drug lord Zeev Rosenstein — who himself has survived at least seven assassination attempts — and the rival Abutbul and Abarjil families, with whom the Alperons battled over a lucrative bottle recycling racket.

Bottle recycling adds up to a $5 million-a-year industry, according to estimates by police and environmental groups. Police say criminals sell restaurants protection in exchange for empties, which leave no paper trail and offer crime families a relatively legitimate source of income.

Organized crime, long overshadowed by the Arab-Israeli conflict, has become such a part of everyday life that Israel has its own "Sopranos"-style TV series, "The Arbitrator," in which even synagogues are no refuge from hit men.

In the past, rival families would settle their scores quietly. But as the pot gets richer they are getting bolder, taking more risks and posing a greater threat to public safety. Most crime bosses now travel with bodyguards in armored vehicles.

Last May, Yaakov Alperon's older brother, Nissim, survived the ninth assassination attempt against him. A three-man hit team dispatched to get him was intercepted by police, and in the ensuing gunbattle a policeman was seriously wounded and one of the gunman was killed.

Yossi Sedbon, a former Tel Aviv police chief, told Army Radio that further bloodshed was likely. "This battle between gangs of criminals will continue and the family will make great efforts to avenge his death," he said.

The mob violence has underscored police's inability — and even unwillingness — to stop organized crime.

Policemen have been caught feeding information to the mob, and last year, the national police chief was forced to resign after a government commission found he ignored ties between senior officers and underworld figures.

Basketball coaching great Pete Newell dies at 93

AP - Nov 17, 5:41 pm EST NCAAB Gallery BERKELEY, Calif. (AP)—Pete Newell coached his last game nearly a half-century ago, but his impact on basketball is felt at the game’s highest level even today.

The beloved Hall of Fame coach, who won an NCAA championship and an Olympic gold medal, and who later tutored some of the game’s greatest big men, died Monday. He was 93.

His death was confirmed by the University of California, the school Newell coached to a national title in 1959. Newell, who had been living near San Diego, had a serious lung operation in 2005.

“I just don’t think anybody has contributed more to my life in more ways than Pete Newell did,” said Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight, Division I’s all-time victory leader, who coached three NCAA champions and also won Olympic gold. “Jerry West and I had a very tearful conversation about an hour after Pete had passed away this morning and I think Jerry felt exactly the same about Pete as I did.”

Newell died at about 10:45 a.m. in Rancho Santa Fe at the home of retired Dr. Earl Shultz, who played for Newell at Cal and had watched over him for the last several years.

Shultz said Newell had a meeting scheduled with West and a writer who was working on a book on West, who played for Newell’s 1960 U.S. Olympic basketball team.

Newell coached for 14 years at San Francisco, Michigan State and California before doctors advised him to give it up because of the emotional toll. His final coaching job came in the 1960 Olympics, when he took a U.S. team led by Oscar Robertson, West and Jerry Lucas on a dominant run to a gold medal in Rome.

Newell later returned to prominence with his famous “big men” camps. He instructed some of the game’s greatest stars, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Shaquille O’Neal and Ralph Sampson.

Among Newell’s biggest admirers was Knight, whose teams practiced Newell’s style of patient, disciplined offense and tenacious, hardworking defense.

“Pete was a second father to both Jerry and myself and while I think that we’re awfully saddened by the passing I think that we can both feel extremely good about the relationship that we had with this basketball giant over most of our entire careers,” Knight said. “Nobody contributed more to the game and its history than Pete.”

Newell was born in Canada but grew up in Los Angeles. His mother envisioned an acting career for her son, and he appeared in several movies including “The Kid,” which made a star of Jackie Coogan.

He attended what is now Loyola Marymount University and served in the Navy during World War II.

“He’s 93. He had a wonderful life, and it was just old age,” Shultz said. “His health was not good, because they had removed two-thirds of his lung and he had smoked for many years. It was starting to be a real struggle for him physically. He was getting more weak and dwindling away a little bit.”

In 1946 he took a job at a small Catholic school, the University of San Francisco, coaching basketball as well as baseball, golf and tennis. The Dons won the National Invitation Tournament in 1949, when it was considered at least the equal of the NCAA tournament.

Following four seasons at USF, the last concluding with a return to the NIT, Newell moved to Michigan State. His best season there was 1952-53, when the Spartans went 13-9 overall and finished third in the Big Ten.

In 1954, Newell was hired at California. The Bears won four consecutive conference titles and made two trips to the Final Four, capturing the NCAA tournament in 1959.

In this Dec. 2006 file photo, …

AP - Nov 17, 5:36 pm EST
The starless Bears had to beat two future Hall of Famers on their way to the championship. In the semifinals they defeated Robertson and Cincinnati 64-58. Then in the final, Cal beat West Virginia, which was led by West.

Showing it was no fluke, the Bears beat both teams again the following season with West and Robertson still in college. Cal topped West Virginia 65-45 in a holiday tournament and knocked off Cincinnati 77-69 in the Final Four.

Cal lost the 1960 championship game 75-55 to Ohio State, which was led by Lucas, John Havlicek and Knight.

Emotionally high strung, Newell lived on coffee, cigarettes and little else during the season. He was told by doctors to leave full-time coaching, which he did in 1960 at age 44. His overall record was 234-123, and he beat UCLA’s John Wooden the last eight times they met.

Newell ended his coaching career in the Olympics, when the U.S. team won every game by at least 24 points.

“He probably impacted more people when he left coaching,” said Jeff Fellenzer, the former tournament director and president of the Pete Newell Challenge. “He really reinvented himself. He never took a dime working those camps. He wanted to send a message to the NBA players it wasn’t about money.”

Newell served as athletic director at Cal from 1960-68, a turbulent era on the Berkeley campus. He worked for several NBA teams in a variety of capacities. He was general manager of the Rockets when they were in San Diego and orchestrated the trade that brought Abdul-Jabbar to Los Angeles when he ran the Lakers. He later was a consultant to the Warriors and a scout for the Cavaliers.

Newell is in part to credit for coming up with the “Golden State” name for the Warriors when they moved across San Francisco Bay to Oakland.

“This is obviously a very sad day for the game of basketball, whether you are associated with the NBA, college or high school ranks,” said Warriors coach Don Nelson, who knew Newell for more than 50 years.

“Pete was a great coach and a great man who had the ability to relate to players and people on every level. A countless number of coaches and players benefited from Pete’s tutelage over the years—including those who attended his specialized camps each summer—and will be indebted to him for the expertise and wisdom that he provided.”

Newell is survived by sons Pete Jr., Roger, Tom and Greg, and four grandchildren.

AP Basketball Writer Jim O’Connell in New York and AP Sports Writer Bernie Wilson in San Diego contributed to this story.

Florida teenager commits suicide in front of live online audience

Fri Nov 21, 2:27 PM

By Rasha Madkour, The Associated Press

MIAMI, Fla. - A South Florida teen died of a lethal drug overdose in front of a live online webcam audience 12 hours after he started blogging about his plan to commit suicide, an investigator said Friday.

Abraham Biggs, 19, died Wednesday from a toxic combination of opiates and benzodiazepine, a drug used to treat insomnia and depression, said Wendy Crane, an investigator with the Broward County medical examiner's office. At least one of the drugs was prescribed to him and it's unclear how he got the others, Crane said.

Some of those watching encouraged Biggs, others tried to talk him out of it, and a few were debating whether the dose he took was lethal, Crane said. It's unclear how many people were watching.

Biggs stated his intentions on a forum at bodybuilding.com, where some users said they did not take him seriously because he had made previous statements about killing himself, Crane said. Biggs posted a link from there to Justin.tv, a site that allows users to broadcast live videos from their webcams.

Someone finally notified the moderator of the body building site's forum, who traced the teen's location to Pembroke Pines and called police, Crane said. Biggs was dead by the time they got to his house around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Crane said. He had started blogging at 3 a.m.

"He was just seen laying on the bed at that point," she said.

Condolences poured into his MySpace page, where the mostly unsmiling teen is seen posing in a series of pictures with various young women.

A woman who answered the phone at Biggs' home and identified herself as his sister said the family was still dealing with his death and declined immediate comment.

Biggs' father, Abraham Biggs Sr., told ABCNews.com that he was not home when his son died. He said his son struggled with depression and had been prescribed benzodiazepine to treat bipolar disorder. Biggs had been "doing better," his father said. "He was a good kid."

The elder Biggs said he was upset that Justin.tv streamed his son's suicide live.

"There seems to be a lack of control as to what people put out on the Internet," the elder Biggs said. "There's a lot of garbage out there that should not be, and unfortunately this was allowed to happen."

In a statement, Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel said: "We regret that this has occurred and want to respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during this time."

Messages left with the body-building website were not immediately returned Friday. A spokesman said Pembroke Pines police are investigating but declined further comment.

Crane said she knows of at least one other case in which a South Florida man shot himself in the head in front of an online audience, although she didn't know how much viewers saw.

In Britain last year, a man hung himself while chatting online.

No one disciplined at Winnipeg hospital after homeless man dies in emerg room

Wed Nov 19, 6:25 PM

By Chinta Puxley, The Canadian Press

WINNIPEG - No single person was to blame for the death of a homeless man during a 34-hour wait in an emergency department because it wasn't clear he was in the hospital seeking care, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority concluded Wednesday.

Although various hospital employees spoke to Brian Sinclair while he languished in the downtown waiting room in September, health authority officials said no one will be disciplined following an internal review of the tragedy.

"There really isn't any single individual that's to blame," said Jan Currie, vice-president and chief nursing officer with the regional health authority.

"I wouldn't say that anyone made assumptions that weren't reasonable in this case. They did not realize that Mr. Sinclair had come seeking care."

Sinclair was never registered or triaged by an emergency department nurse after being referred to the hospital and wasn't noticed for 34 hours. By then he had died of a preventable bladder infection.

Sinclair, who was in a wheelchair after losing both of his legs to frostbite, had been dead for several hours when he was first examined by a doctor.

The province's medical examiner has called a formal inquest into his death.

In the meantime, the regional health authority interviewed staff on duty at the time as part of its own internal review and is making changes to ensure no one falls through the cracks again.

Anyone arriving in any of Winnipeg's six emergency departments will now be registered electronically before going on to the waiting room, Currie said. Hospital staff must also talk to each patient in the waiting room every four hours.

Those working in the emergency department shouldn't have to deal with people who are there for follow-up specialist appointments or other non-emergencies, she added.

Such patients will be admitted to the hospital somewhere else to lessen the burden on triage nurses.

Hospitals will also continue with sensitivity training "designed to honour all cultures and . . . challenge assumptions."

Homeless people often take shelter from the cold in the downtown emergency department and that won't change, Currie said.

Some hospitals around the country actually have shelters attached - something the authority will now look at, she added.

The fact that Sinclair died because he was never even registered was unusual and unprecedented in Canada, Currie said. It's caused hospitals across the country to look at their policies to see if a similar tragedy could occur.

"It's not something that we had contemplated and it's not something across the country that anyone in an emergency department contemplates," Currie said.

"What this case has done is helped us to learn a lot about how people come seeking care."

Winnipeg's downtown hospital, the Health Sciences Centre, has already announced it is adding the equivalent of 10 positions to ensure that someone talks to all incoming patients.

More staff, with training in social work, will also be added to regularly check on people in the waiting room. The hospital is also requiring any clinics that send people to an emergency department to follow up by phone.

"The majority of the changes that we've made at HSC are intended to ... ensure that every patient that comes into the emergency room is triaged and we actually know that they are there for care," said Adam Topp, chief operating officer of the Health Sciences Centre.

"That is the key gap that occurred in Mr. Sinclair's case."

Sinclair was dropped off at the centre by a taxi on Sept. 19 after visiting a downtown health clinic, which is part of the health authority.

Some hospital staff - including housekeeping and security guards - did speak with him at some point, but it was not until shortly after midnight on Sept. 21 that he was examined and pronounced dead.

The hospital has said its emergency department wasn't short-staffed at the time.

If they cant decide which one is responsible, perhaps that should mean that they are in part guilty of causing that mans death. Lets start at the top, with the government, for not providing housing and the necessities of life.

Austrian woman finds dead frog in spinach: newspaper

Tue Nov 18, 11:26 AM

VIENNA (AFP) - Whoever said spinach was good for you? Even Popeye's stomach would probably have churned at the grisly find made by a 32-year-old mother from Vienna who decided to cook frozen spinach for her family's evening meal, the daily Oesterreich reported Tuesday.

Martina R. told the newspaper she thought the spinach was a bit "lumpy" as it bubbled in the saucepan.

But it was only when she went to dish out a serving for her young daughter that she noticed there was a dead frog in it.

"My stomach turned. It was almost whole, except for a missing leg which I probably knocked off when I stirred the spinach," the shocked housewife said.

She complained to the supermarket where she had bought the spinach and the manager presented her with a free packet of coffee as compensation, Oesterreich reported.

SLINKY MOURNING...

James, former head of Slinky company, dies
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 23 (UPI) --

Retired James Industries Inc. Chief Executive Officer Betty James, whose company made the wiry Slinky toy, has died in Philadelphia, an official says.

Blair County Commissioner Diane Meling remembered James as a prominent community member who helped create one of the most memorable toys in the history of the United States, the Altoona (Pa.) Mirror reported Saturday.

''She was an icon in the community because of that business,'' Meling said of James, who died Thursday at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. ''What kid didn't grow up with a Slinky?''

James founded the toy company with her late husband Richard in 1945 and helped manage the company and its wiry creations until she retired in 1998.

Her company is now known as POOF-Slinky Inc., but still creates the coil-shaped toys that were known for using its own momentum to move about.

The only survivor identified by the Mirror for James, whose cause of death was not specified, was her son Tom.

Falling cars and rattling windows mark deadly collapse in Mtl parking garage

Wed Nov 26, 7:27 PM

By Andy Blatchford And Peter Rakobowchuk, The Canadian Press

MONTREAL - Cars literally fell out of the air. Apartment windows rattled. Witnesses compared the sonic boom to a bomb. Within that split second, a man was crushed to death.

The floor of a Montreal parking garage collapsed on Wednesday, with a giant slab of concrete dropping to the storey below, smashing vehicles and killing a 36-year-old driver.

Authorities described the collapsed floor as a giant, falling pancake - a plummeting concrete chunk 30 metres in length, 30 metres in width, and untold tonnes in weight.

The tumble triggered instant chaos: 500 people were forced to flee an apartment highrise; toddlers whisked from a daycare centre; and people screaming and crying that they'd narrowly escaped death.

Residents said the tragedy could have been far worse.

The slab fell at 8:45 a.m., less than an hour after the morning rush when as many as 50 people regularly head for their cars.

Tenant Simon Abou-Antoun had just left the building with his nine-year-old nephew. He expressed fear about what might have happened had the disaster struck earlier.

"It would have been catastrophic," said Abou-Antoun, who has lived in the building for four years.

"I would be among the dead - or among those inside. . . (It's) a miracle. We are very, very lucky."

Rescue crews tried frantically to reach a man trapped in a car. They used jackhammers to break through the concrete and circular saws to slice through his vehicle door.

The man sat slumped in the driver's seat and did not respond when they shouted out to him. He was declared dead after crews made it into the car.

The victim had just arrived for work at a dental-supplies courier company that stored its vehicle fleet in the underground garage.

The concrete slab dropped, causing a loud boom and then shock among motorists who'd just parked their cars and barely averted disaster.

"It caved in - sort of like a pancake," said fire department spokesman Aime Charette.

"It fell as if you'd just cut out a piece."

Authorities didn't believe anyone else was trapped but were scouring through the debris hours after the accident occurred in the basement of an apartment building named Joie de vivre.

Residents said there had been numerous complaints about maintenance of the building, a modern-style highrise built in 1974. They described cracks in the concrete, rust in its supporting rods, and a rusted-out pipe that fell from the garage ceiling two weeks ago.

The 17-storey highrise in suburban west-end Montreal rents out apartments at between $500 and $760 a month - and the basement parking spots start at $45.

One resident said his seventh-storey windows began to shake when he heard an explosion that sounded like a bomb.

The fire alarm went off and the man, who did not want to give his name, headed to the garage to get his car out of the building.

He opened the door and choked on a cloud of dust. He heard frantic screams for help from panicked employees of the courier company.

Through the darkness, the only thing he could see were the headlight beams from the victim's car.

He approached the vehicle and could see it had been crushed and was partially buried under a mound of rubble.

From the entrance to the garage, a grey car could be seen flipped at a 45-degree angle and perched atop another vehicle after tumbling from the top storey.

The building owner - real-estate giant Cap Reit - initially declined to comment but said it might issue a statement.

The Toronto-based firm holds more than 27,400 homes and touts itself as providing safe, secure and comfortable accommodation.

Montreal firefighters got the call at 8:47 a.m. and sent more than two dozen vehicles and 80 firefighters to the scene. Two people were treated for shock.

Mayor Gerald Tremblay said it would be at least 24 hours before residents could be told when they might return home. Many of them were relocated to a shelter at local community centre.

Tremblay said it's the responsibility of the Quebec government and the property owners to inspect the buildings.

"As a result of what has happened, definitely we will have to evaluate the situation and talk to the owners of these buildings to see if they have made the necessary inspections to secure the premises," he said.

The tragedy comes after a series of highly publicized collapses to Quebec structures.

In recent years two highway overpasses have seen deadly collapses and a private food emporium saw its roof cave in, killing three employees.

But one engineering organization warned against comparing the latest incident to the previous ones.

He said the only parallel to be drawn between the garage collapse and Quebec's infrastructure problems is that both involved physical structures.

"In the last few hours, not having determined what the situation is, it could be a variety of reasons as to why this happened," said Peter Casquinha, executive director of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.

"The jury is still out and they will be out until they get some inspectors in there."

Swedish hip-hop artist charged in road-rage death in Los Angeles

Wed Nov 26, 9:57 AM

By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - A Swedish hip-hop artist and songwriter has been arrested following a confrontation on a Hollywood street in which a pedestrian died.

Authorities say David Jassy, a 34-year-old musician also known as Dave Monopoly, was to be arraigned Wednesday on charges of assault, battery and leaving the scene of a deadly accident.

Prosecutors claim that the victim, John Osnes, slapped Jassy's rented sport utility vehicle Sunday when it crept into his crosswalk.

Jassy then got out of his car, punched Osnes in the face then kicked him in the head when Osnes bent over to pick up his glasses, Los Angeles prosecutors alleged in a written statement.

Jassy then broke free of several people trying to restrain him and ran over Osnes as he tried to flee.

Osnes, a 55-year-old jazz pianist, died at a hospital later Sunday.

Jassy was arrested Monday and was being held on $1 million bail. He faced a judge Tuesday, but his arraignment was delayed a day after he requested a Swedish interpreter.

Jassy, who has co-written songs for "High School Musical" star Ashley Tisdale, was being represented by lawyers from the Public Defender's Office.

Surging shoppers kill New York Wal-Mart employee

Fri Nov 28, 11:47 AM

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Wal-Mart employee in New York state's Long Island died on Friday when a throng of shoppers surged into the store and physically broke down the doors, a police spokesman said.

The 34-year-old man was at the entrance of the Valley Stream Walmart store when it opened at 5 a.m. local time and was knocked to the ground, the police report said.

The exact cause of death was still to be determined by a medical examiner.

Four shoppers, including a 28-year-old pregnant woman, were also taken to local hospitals for injuries sustained in the incident, police said.

The Friday after America's Thanksgiving holiday is known as Black Friday and marks what is traditionally the busiest retail day of the year, kicking off the Christmas shopping season.

U.S. stores across the country opened in the early hours of Friday to offer discounts to consumers hit by a contracting economy. Hundreds of shoppers waited on line before dawn at some locations to secure deals on holiday gifts.

Representatives at Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, were not immediately available for comment.

very sad start to the xmas season what a shame for the mans family and the injured shoppers. I understand that some people need the discount prices to provide xmas for their families but what a cost. If I had been one of the customers involved in the mob I wouldn't be able to give that gift to anyone I love with a clear concience. I also woud not want to receive that gift either If it is true that safety measures were in place and wamart had extra security then i agree with kathy m ban it

Wow. I know we are totally mob minded but I was strangly stunned when I first heard of this incident. I don't understand why we seem to think that it is necessary to mob the stores like that in the first place. There are 12 months in the year and average 30 days in a month. But we still seem to save it all for the last few weeks. It makes me glad a generally make my Christmas gifts. Then I'm forced to think about what I want to give in September.

Shut down black friday in my opinion.... If u can't protect the workers and shoppers, than don't bring on the big sales.. PROTECT the shoppers and workers Walmart.. This man's family will never appreciate Black Friday ever again and christmas will be grim for them. I think it is awful. I have 6 kids and I don't buy a ton of stuff for them. I teach them what CHRISTmas is about... I know some of their friends get more individually than my 6 combined. That's not Christmas..THAT'S SPOILED ROTTEN.

it is pretty sad that we can't even walk into a store without someone killing someone like that toyrus store i mean these are stores that are for our familys and for our kids. what can be so important that you have to kill someone. somtimes you have to just let things roll of your back and move on.

Police kill assailant after multiple stabbing at birthday party

Sun Nov 30, 9:19 AM

A children's birthday party in Oshawa, Ont., ended in horror when a man with a knife killed one person and wounded three others, including two small children, police said.

Durham Regional police officers were called to a townhouse in the city Saturday afternoon where a woman, her partner and two boys - ages three and seven - had been stabbed. The woman was taken to hospital but later died.

The two boys were taken to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, where the youngest child is reported in critical condition.

The woman's partner, who was stabbed in the back of the head, is also reported in critical condition.

Officers went to a neighbouring townhouse to arrest a suspect. After they arrived, police shot and killed a 47-year-old man, the province's Special Investigations Unit said.

Four-time All-Star Hubert “Pit” Martin dies

1 hour, 52 minutes ago

MONTREAL (TICKER) — Hubert “Pit” Martin, a four-time NHL All-Star in the 1960s and ’70s, died as a result of a snowmobile accident. He was 64.

Marie-Josee Ouellet, a spokeswoman for the Quebec provincial police, said Martin was driving his vehicle on a lake in northwestern Quebec when the ice cracked and he plunged into the water.

A team of divers will attempt to retrieve Martin’s body on Monday.

Martin, who was set to turn 65 next week, played in 1,101 games with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks from 1963-79, registering 324 goals and 809 points. He was an All-Star in each campaign from 1971-74.

“This is a very sad day for the Blackhawks family. Pit was a wonderful human being and a mentor to me,” Chicago Blackhawks general manager Dale Tallon said in a statement.

“Growing up in the same town, I idolized him and then was very lucky to have a chance to play with him in the National Hockey League. He was such a great man that did so much for his family and the community. He is going to be missed by everyone in our organization. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

In 1967, Martin was part of one of the most lopsided trades in league history, when he was shipped from Boston to Chicago in a deal that sent Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield to Boston.

The trade marked a turning point for the Bruins, who won Stanley Cups in 1969-70 and 1971-72.

Martin enjoyed his best season with the Blackhawks in 1972-73, collecting a career-high 90 points (29 goals, 61 assists).
