La Journée mondiale contre la peine de mort est soulignée par de multiples initiatives sur les cinq continents de la planète, mercredi.
Sous le slogan « Non à la peine de mort », des associations membres de la Coalition mondiale contre la peine de mort organisent des expositions, des conférences et des tables rondes.
Des pétitions sont également lancées. La Coalition entendait aussi organiser des visites de condamnés à mort dans une centaine de pays. La Journée mondiale 2007 cible notamment la Chine à la veille des Jeux olympiques de Pékin 2008.
Selon la coalition, la peine de mort est « un acte de vengeance ». De plus, elle estime que, dans la majorité des cas, les condamnations à mort sont prononcées au terme de procès « au cours desquels les droits de la défense et les garanties d'une justice équitable ont été violés ».
En 2006, la Journée mondiale contre la peine de mort s'est traduite par plus de 450 initiatives locales dans 47 pays. L'Union européenne et le Conseil de l'Europe ont aussi souligné cette journée.
Au total, 145 142 signatures ont été recueillies pour « les cinq condamnés à mort emblématiques des échecs de la justice que voulait dénoncer la Coalition », selon un communiqué publié par l'organisation.
Créée à Rome le 13 mai 2002, la Coalition mondiale contre la peine de mort veut contribuer à mettre un terme définitif aux condamnations à mort et aux exécutions.
